My wife taught in a large christian school for 19 years and our kids crew up at that school so we know what type of teaching environment you are working in. I think that it must be an amazing feeling ...David,
I think that it must be an amazing feeling to be able to watch your students grow into independence. Where most teachers only see their students through one year.... you have the opportunity to help them over the course of many years. How fascinating! Your personal stories were true to the nature of our reading and just as delightful. Real stories make learning more meaningful. I have been told by many higher education teachers that I must have a lot of patience to work with young students.... but I see it the way you do with your own students. We must go for the possibilities within each student. If we can ignite a spark within them for a love of learning.... their future will be full of endless possibilities. I have made it my personal goal to ignite a love of reading in my students and I think I have been successful in doing so in the last two years. This past year, my class alone read over 20 million words (via Accelerated Reader Quizzes). Although I am proud of my students accomplishments.... they can’t come close to the pride you must feel for all of your students, especially the two that you wrote about here. I have found much insight from this book but have not even related it to my students' learning until just now. The art of possibility is HUGE for our students. Even the lightest improvement in independent skills is a major success. I too have had to convince parents to let their students participate in "chores" around the house. They often say that they are too hard for their child, and I always reply, "then have them help." Parents find out that if they do work on a task, their child is capable. It becomes our job to teach them prompting and when to make that prompt less restrictive.
Good luck to you!
KristenKristen_McKerninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17793542610915896516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2479633735878735154.post-87839498583775606312012-05-20T19:54:22.385-05:002012-05-20T19:54:22.385-05:00Hello David,

Sometimes you have to offer students a skill, and sometimes you offer them a positive human experience. Passion is the key ingredient in success I think. However, I think that it's most effective use would be in your situation. There are so many standards and expectations for elementary students that I don't think the giving an a concept would go over well. I'm not surprised to hear that you are already practicing the giving an A concept in your current environment. I'm surprised that you have to actually give a grade for all of your subjects. I can see where the frustration would come from. On paper you are studying the same thing but in the classroom a completely different set of lessons are being taught. A pass/fail systems seems like it would make more sense to me.... But what do I know. :-) I found it difficult to place some of his situations into my own curriculum practice because I've never taken music. I was in band and I would have loved the challenge of living up to the grade that has already been given to me. It is really cool that you could make a personal connection to your life and your children! One last thing, it is all invented. I believe that students with special needs can be able to do most of the same tasks when given the proper support. I know that is not always the case, but I do my best to never judge a book by its cover.
Thanks for sharing!!Teacher-in-Traininghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13444265792614374677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2479633735878735154.post-13393603386719036242012-05-11T22:44:26.282-05:002012-05-11T22:44:26.282-05:00I noticed to very important focuses in your respon...I noticed to very important focuses in your response to this week's reading and it is the importance of family and your students. With regards to your family, I like how you could match up their progress in a way like that which was shared in the Zander video. They are each successful in their own way and have been afforded the opportunity to be themselves and follow their own path. The other thing that I noticed is your relation of the reading to your students. As a fellow educator too, I see how important it is to sometimes not go by the book and do what will work for the students and help them to learn and grow. I also get where you are coming from with in terms of assigning letter grades and the like when it doesn't fit your situation. I like the pass/fail choice too and then you can always add comments to provide further detail if needed.

Good use of all CAPS to point out the type of students so those they may view the post know where you are coming from and don't have too many of those unclear perceptions. Also, I like the last sentence you wrote and came up with the following:

C.A.M.P. There a lot of arrangements that the Barbershop Harmony Society owns, and we can compete with those at no charge. We still have to register them. So do we share arrangements now some, but most of the time we are contacting arrangers to get permission to use them. People do make changes to ending of songs (called a tag) or change notes in places to make the arrangement fit the chorus or quartet. Most arrangers are ok with that...sort of remixing it LOLAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06973522028250978374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2479633735878735154.post-69761452116986199452012-05-03T19:47:21.741-05:002012-05-03T19:47:21.741-05:00Your post really got me thinking about your art fo...Your post really got me thinking about your art form of Barbershop. The harmonies and arrangements are very similar for all songs, so are they still copyrighted? I found “The Barbershop Harmony Society” has an article titled,” Copyright Basics for Barbershoppers”.
It can be found at the following link:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:N-6_0lHaFm0J:www.barbershop.org/document-center/category/8-copyright-legal.html?download%3D68%253Acopyright-basics-for-barbershoppers+Copyright+Basics+for+Barbershoppers&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgy9wlm6ERXyzIjbeOGG4M_42VvsVdC1RvJ8JqSGcdYusggU0X-Bd_eY1vMn_U0Ev7xiLbQj7VjGYgrU00NGhr5e8Y5E5fHw5koCncWStWHcdsyMg88Rv6IKuwVjnnw1sp7Noat&sig=AHIEtbQsTw1wjBmfcDVqREBjtYR-k-DYNw

The statement that jumped out at me was: “Violations could result in a substantial fine. Examples of violations include arranging, selling an arrangement, or photocopying without permission. Penalties can range from $20,000 to $100,000 per copy, so it behooves all Barbershoppers to abide by the copyright statutes.”

All I have to say is be careful my friend! I am curious how you get the music you use in competitions. In my mind something like barbershop music should be exempted from the copyright rule. You have to wonder how many other grey areas like that exist? I love how the music is passed around not to steal it from each other but to make it better. Isn’t that what music should be about, working together to make it all sounds better?

I love love remix music, there is so much of that on youtube today. Here is a video you can check out (it’s a recent one that went viral) it’s a remix someone did using Obama’s words and having him sing the “ Sex and I know it song by LMFAO.” I usually just find remix music funny and just a good way to get people to laugh. I can see that it could have educational benefits I just haven’t found a good educational remix yet to use in my environment.

http://youtu.be/OWgO9-AIROIKatie Rosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02762858336744064504noreply@blogger.com
